Which came first - the chicken or the egg?
*In other words did the controller cause the helplessness or is the helplessness the result of the controller?
LH is interesting.
It's cause is environmental and can arise as the result of brainwashing and occur in humans at any age (and is also found to be made to exist in animals through depressive response).
Details of it can be found on this wiki link

In a controlling situation a controller targets members of his family in several ways (i) using Folie à deux (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folie_%C3%A0_deux)
(ii) constant defining of an individual - telling them how to think.
In terms of LH the critical factor is indoctrination of a belief that one has no self worth and, while wearing, it seems to be the case that damage is permanent or at least very hard to reverse.
A young adult came to. After 10 months I learned that his father (a psychologically violent verbally abusive controller) had (as long as the child could remember) been telling his son he will never get a job, was worthless, will never amount to anything.
The young man asked me if I thought he was the way he was as the result of his fathers abuse.
The symptoms of the lad would include many things that would come under the heading of clumsy and careless. He is essentially a very frustrating human being to know.
I would like to hear from people who have experienced learned helplessness in a controlling environment.
* this is interesting: Blame the victim: in other words:which came first the victim or the abuser.
